Floris Kaayk’s work focuses on futuristic visions, fantasies and concepts. It visualizes technological progress, sometimes by showing the benefits, at other times by presenting the negative consequences. Among his video works are The Order Electrus, Metalosis Maligna, The Origin of Creatures and Juxtaposis. These videos were presented and awarded at exhibitions, film festivals and art events all around the globe. In 2012 his online media project Human Birdwings reached the world press. It allowed Floris to share the project’s content at television and radioshows, like ABC news, CBS news, and Dutch primetime television show De Wereld Draait Door.
Simultaneously he worked on the Rayfish Footwear project, a collaboration with Next Nature Network, Koert van Mensvoort and Ton Meijdam. Rayfish Footwear was the story about a fictional company that offered personalized sneakers crafted from genetically modified stingray leather. Various media platforms were used to spread the story.
In 2015 Floris Kaayk released the music video Witch Doctor, for Dutch rock band De Staat. This collaboration with Studio Smack and Torre Florim has been watched over 10.000.000 times on Facebook and YouTube and won several international awards.
His latest project, The Modular Body, is an online science fiction story about the creation of Oscar, a living organism built from human cells. Within a month the project’s website was visited over 500.000 times, the Facebook page was liked 91.500 times and the video’s were watched over 15.000.000 times on Facebook and Youtube. The project evoked a large discussion about the ethical and philosophical implications of developments in contemporary biotechnology.
